    IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.

    Ematic™ Lubrication System
The Ematic™ guide bar, when used with STIHL OILOMATIC® saw chain, will provide proper lubrication and less oil consumption than conventional methods. The system works because two ramps, strategically placed in the guide bar rail, help contain the flow of oil and direct all lubrication to the sliding faces of the bar and chain links as well as the rivets and driver holes, which in turn can reduce bar oil consumption up to 50%.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Little Saw for Limbs and Small tree's. I've had this saw for 4 yrs. now and am very happy with it. I am not much of a manual reader, but you should def. read the owners manual before starting this saw. There are specific steps to take when you start it cold. I think I pulled the pull string about 400 times when I first got it and was cursing the saw for not starting. Then I realized I didn't have the choke on the proper setting!! Then I started cursing myself!! LOL. Great little saw plenty of power. Engine has run flawless since I've had it. I think my only complaint would be where you have to tighten the bar, it's opposite of the shroud and it's a little tough when trying to get the chain on the bar. Not a game changer though just takes a little patience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little saw I have 3 Stihl saws and this little saw is great for small limbs. Always starts with no problems. Just bought my second one as I wore out my first one after 8 years of hard service. I cut 20 + cord of wood a year so my saws get a work out and I would not buy any thing but Stihl. I have been using Stihl saws for over 40 years.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great cuts real nice for average chainsaw if needed purchase it perfect price Had a terrible storm one night. Neighbor told me I had a giant branch from a tree in their backyard that ripped off still hanging laying behind their garage. The branch was about the size of their garage also. So I went a rented a echo chainsaw about the same size & power as the ms-170 from a tool rental. Got to cutting worked like bad/junk just terrible. So I said might as well buy my own will end using it alot eventually. Got to cutting with the ms-170. Went through everything with absolutely no problems. STIHL makes the best products

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Misses the mark I had the saw at the shop 4 times and it never would start correctly or run properly. Stihl lowered their standards when they made this one. I have a much larger Stihl that I have used for years without issue. This one? when it wouldn't run I was told it was my fault, that I wasn't running it right. Really?

Rated 3 out of 5 by from What I expect from other chainsaws I have 26 accounts that I maintain as a "side" job. From time to time I need a dependable chainsaw for light limb trimming and the base of dead shrubs. During Stihl days I thought no better time to give Stihl a try and get one of their legendary chainsaws on a budget. When cold it starts like a champ. It can chew up limbs that are far bigger than what is expected to do. I like to refer to it as a pocket rocket of chainsaws. My problem with it is that after 20-30mins of use it won't start back up. I have needed to use this saw 4 times since purchase and every time it gives me the same problem. It will run like new for a little while but as soon as I shut it off I can't get it started again. Like other chainsaws I have had in the past I just let it cool down for about 30-45mins then I can get it started again. I know the saw is meant for occasional use, and that is all I use it, but when that occasion arises I need it to run until the job is done.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from All I'll ever need Bought my MS 170 a year ago as part of a business grand opening sale. Used it to cut down 5 pine trees ranging in trunk size from 8 inches to 18 inches. Did exceptionally well, ran great. Bogged down a bit on the bigger stumps but as long as I took my time it cut right through. Never have trouble starting it. Glad I bought it on a sale, otherwise I probably would've ended up with a different brand. This saw is perfect for the DIY homeowner or landlord with trees to trim and prune. I usually climb the tree with the saw running and can support the saw's weight with one hand long enough to get the limb cut down. I also appreciate that this saw fits a 12" bar and chain.
